Project Highlights

Herold Engineering Limited participated on this design/ build/ bid project for the the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. This Canadian Coast Guard Search and Rescue Station consist of operational and residential accommodations for the Canadian Coast Guard Detachment and is situated on the Port Hardy downtown waterfront.
The project consisted of two new buildings and a walkway down to the beach at the end of Shipley Street in Port Hardy. The residence building is a two storey 280 m2 wood frame structure and the operations building is a single storey wood frame of approximately 310 m2. Both structures were designed to post-disaster standards using the 2010 National Building Code of Canada as well as using the latest in structural material standards. An important aspect of these buildings is the seismic drift limitation for post-disaster use. Structural framing is 50mm topping on 38mm decking supported by glue laminated beams.

Because of the inherit lightness, flexibility, and ductility of wood-frame construction, it is particularly well suited to the construction of post-disaster building of this scale. Lee Rowley, Principal, Herold Engineering Ltd.
