Learn More

1994
With a consulting engineering presence in Nanaimo since 1980, Mike Herold, the Founder of the Company started Herold Engineering in 1994 as a consulting structural engineering company specializing in building and bridge projects.

1995
After a short period working out of his house as a sole practitioner, Mike moved the office to Stewart Avenue on Nanaimo’s waterfront to accommodate the growth in business and the addition of staff. Those were exciting times planning and developing new office space and celebrating every new project and client.

1995
Another major project that came along at the same time was the Fire Fighter Training Facilities at CFB Esquimalt BC and CFB Halifax, NS. Major projects for a firm that was just starting out. To date, Herold Engineering has completed many fire halls, RCMP stations, across British Columbia.

1995
Our very first client was client #0001 Malaspina College (now known as VIU) and our first project was a whopper for us. The expansion of the Vocational Trades Department including four new buildings.

2000
As our client list grew (5200 clients to date) along with our Volume of work, so did our Staff requirements and in 2000 Herold Engineering expanded into civil engineering services with George Hrabowych joining as a Partner.

2005
We completed two office expansions at our Stewart Avenue locations to accommodate our growth and in 2005 we moved to a brand new three storey office building on Shenton Road where we remain today.

2005
In 2005 Lee Rowley joined us as the Manager of the Buildings Division and became a Principal.

2012
With continued growth in the Victoria market, we knew we needed to be closer to better serve our South Island clients. In 2012, we started an office in Victoria led by Kate Ulmer and with over 20 Staff today, our office is currently situated on the corner of Fort Street and Vancouver Street.

2014
In 2014, Sean Herold and Sean Mahon become partners at Herold Engineering.

2015
Herold Engineering added Building Enclosure engineering services to our areas of expertise in 2015 and opened an office in Ucluelet in 2017 to accommodate our on-going workload on the Westcoast of Vancouver Island and perhaps Mike’s secret love for surfing.

Testimonials
As a steel fabricator I have had the pleasure of supplying structural steel for numerous projects designed by Herold Engineering. The quality of work and cooperation that our firm has enjoyed is among the best that I personally have seen in 45 years in the industry.
We have just recently completed two separate projects that were contracted to Herold Engineering. Both Country Grocer and TD Bank were designed on schedule, as set out by our Project Manager. The projects came in on budget and we are very happy with the service that Herold Engineering gave us. We would highly recommend them.
What truly separates Herold Engineering from other engineering firms was the support and responsiveness provided during the project executions. The team at Herold are genuinely concerned and empathetic with the sub-trades they work with and exhibit a sense of urgency when providing engineering solutions that help maintain the overall project schedule.
On behalf of APEGBC, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize your employee Jarrod Koster, P.Eng. for his service to the Vancouver Island Branch… APEGBC sincerely appreciates the service volunteers like Jarrod make to our association and the support from the employers of our member such as Herold Engineering Limited.
I’m happy to report that the pole was erected successfully! There was a bit of a rush to get it over the finish line, but Tony brought in a team of helpers and they got everything completed on time. Your insight and generosity have assisted us tremendously.
Ladysmith Community Services Centre achieved LEED Gold. Your commitment to achieving this recognition is greatly appreciated.
